| One key element of a tunnel boring machine is the tail seal. It must be a perfectly efficient joint, ensuring a dynamic seal, able to resist against groundwater; seawater, fines and grouts (including active component grouts). Any kind of water or grout entry may have disastrous consequences. In addition to the risk of flooding of the tunnel and grout ingress, there may be problems of TBM steering, annular gap filling etc. Whilst tunnelling, a specific compound called Tail Seal Compound must be injected constantly into the tail brushes to ensure the correct sealing. |
